Alaska small business health insurance regulations

Alaska health insurance companies must sell small group health insurance to any small business that applies. Also, small businesses of more than 2 but less the 50 must be offered the same Alaska small business health insurance policies that are sold to other small businesses.

If you qualify, your company must also meet minimum participation requirements set by your Alaska health insurance company. Unless you meet the minimum level of participation your Alaska health insurance company requires, your policy can be terminated.

It is legal for Alaska health insurance companies to charge higher premiums for an Alaska small business health insurance policy due to the group's health status, age, and gender. However, there are limits to how much policy prices can vary based on these health factors.

As with individual health insurance, illness can not be used as grounds for terminating Alaska small business health insurance.

Self-employed Alaska health insurance

The states differ in their treatment of self-employed health insurance. As a self employed business owner living in Alaska, you can not purchase small business health insurance if you have no other employees. Instead you should look into purchasing an individual Alaska health insurance policy.

If you are self-employed, however, and you purchase your own individual Alaska health insurance policy, you can benefit from a large tax deduction. A percentage of your annual Alaska health insurance premiums is deductible from your taxes if you choose to itemize. Depending upon the year, you can deduct either 70, 80 or 90 percent of your premiums.
