District of Columbia health insurance laws

Washington D health insurance policies include the following:

  • guaranteed renewability provision
  • exclusion period for pre-existing conditions of no more than 12 months.
  • 31 day coverage for newborns and adopted children

D.C. health insurance regulations

D.C. health insurance companies can:

  • deny you health insurance on the basis of your health
  • charge you higher premiums on the basis of your health

D.C. health insurance companies are prohibited from:

  • terminating an existing health insurance policy due to illness.

However, Blue Cross Blue Shield is required to offer health insurance to every resident during a six month open enrollment period.
